Hair vs Sweat

Last week on Nilsa’s blog, she wrote about how she’s changing her shampoo routine and how it has changed her hair (so far for the good). I’ve been meaning to pick out a new shampoo myself because I don’t like the feel of my hair. It’s very dry and sort of sticks out in a weird way. At the same time, I wash my hair A LOT. It’s not something I usually do, but have had to lately because going to the gym makes one sweat copious amounts of, well, sweat.

So I started searching around the internet, reading various articles on what other women have done with their hair (p.s. Matt does not have this problem). I found a lot of vinegar and baking soda suggestions or mixing Dr. Bronner’s castile soap with coconut oil. Many promoted the former and some promoted the latter. But mostly all the articles/blogs I read poo-pooed on using shampoo.

Let me just stop right here and say this: I’m not a hippie person. I will choose the easiest way out for mostly anything if it works well because I am lazy and have no time to make my own cleaning liquids at home (be it for my hair, cleaning the bathtub, or washing our clothes).

Also, I hate the smell of vinegar. I love eating it, but boy do I hate the smell of it. As in despise it. Plus my hair is not a salad.

Oh and in case you are wondering, the baking soda mix with vinegar and what not for cleaning the bathtub DOES NOT WORK ON OUR BATHTUB. So Clorox it is.

But I digress.

I bought a shampoo from Whole Foods that I happened to see was cheap and had no parabens, sulfates, yada, yada, but did have some other chemicals that will also probably kill me (eventually). A friend of mine also sent me this article on “no pooing” (the name for not using shampoo annoys me to no end). So I figure I’ll use the shampoo about 1-2 times a week and the rest of the week I’ll just stick with water. Possibly a bit of conditioning because my hair dries out like crazy in the winter.

Keep in mind I work out about 3 times a week and sometimes go to a yoga class which totals it up to 4 times a week of sweaty hair for Marie. And by “sweaty” I do mean hair completely drenched in salty liquid that my sweat glands are expelling.

So ew.

I washed my hair yesterday (Sunday) and plan on going to the gym a couple times this week, plus a yoga class. I”ll let you know how things work out by the end of this week.

    If this works for you… let me know! I wash my hair too often (but I can’t stand it if I don’t…DILEMMA!)

  2. Can’t wait to hear! Yep, the no pooing term is already getting old. I spritz my hair with dry shampoo between washes. I’m intrigued at the “use only water” part. What’s the point then?

      Right? I have no idea. I’m just trying it to see what happens. I haven’t tried dry shampoo yet so if this doesn’t work, that might be what I do next. Although then I’m just shampooing all the time (be it dry or regular). That’s something I’m trying to get away from. Just trying to decrease the amount of times I do shampoo my hair.
