If you know Matt and me, then you know we are nerds. We love sarcasm and smart jokes, which of course means we love the NPR Saturday morning show Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! Today’s news + nerdy jokes about today’s news = hilariousness.
At least for us it does.
Back in March, while in the car as Matt was driving me to do some photography in DC one weekend, I somehow came across mention of the show coming to Virginia in the summer. So of course I pounced and bought two tickets to it immediately.
I had been counting down the days to go see one of our favorite radio shows (yes, that is how nerdy we are) in a venue not too far out from where we live, and then FINALLY, last week, the day (or rather evening) had come.
Even though Wait Wait is aired on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., it is pre-recorded (usually in Chicago where it is based but they tour the U.S., which is awesome), on a Thursday evening. It’s a one-hour show when aired on the radio, but when they are live, it actually takes 1.5-2 hours.
Those were two hours of pure awesome. You can’t really tell when you listen to it on the radio, but Peter Sagal – the host – actually interacts quite a bit with the audience, as does Bill and the panel.
They obviously cut a lot out to shorten it to one hour, which is why it’s way more fun to see in person. Granted, if this is your cup of tea. Or rather comedy.
The guest at the show we were at was U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and I absolutely loved him. He was super laid back, really funny, and of course very smart (also tall – I did not know he was that tall).
I really hope they come back next year to Virginia because I’ll definitely be buying tickets again to go see them. If they are ever in your neck of the woods and you like this sort of show, then you should check them out live!
P.S. They made fun of Trump, A LOT during the show. More so than what was actually aired on the radio. We all couldn’t stop laughing.
